Courtois leaves the Belgium national team “Disappointed and humiliated”
There is the Thibaut Courtois case in Belgium. The fire that has started in the ‘Red Devils’ is unprecedented in Belgian football. Domenico Tedesco accuses Thibaut Courtois of leaving the national team hanging.
The story begins with the fact that Real Madrid’s Belgian goalkeeper will not be available to Tedesco in the momentous clash against Estonia to qualify for the Eurocup. A plant that was conceived last night and with which the mess has been mounted.
According to the Belgian press, Courtois decided to go home after not being awarded the captaincy in Belgium’s previous game at home to Austria. An anger in which the coach Tedesco tried to mediate and after several hours of meeting he was unable to redress the situation.
He himself has confirmed it in statements to HLN. These are the words of the Italian coach: “Together we decided that Romelu (Lukaku) would be the captain against Austria and Thibaut tomorrow against Estonia. That was fine for everyone, but after the game (against Austria) he suddenly wanted to talk to me and said that he was going home because he was disappointed and offended”.
“From the beginning I tried to show him the appreciation that he deserves. In my eyes he is the best goalkeeper in the world. I love him as a goalkeeper but also as a human being. I’m shocked.”
Later in the official press conference in Belgium he followed the same line: “I repeat it here: I am surprised and shocked. We didn’t expect something like this to happen. In March we decided that De Bruyne would be captain and Lukaku and Courtois on equal terms in the rank of vice-captain”.
“We had decided that Lukaku would lead the group against Austria and Courtois against Estonia. Everything was fine, but after the game he told me he was upset and he was going home. I tried to talk to him because it was a difficult decision. We have a good relationship”.
“For me nothing has changed, but he has made a difficult decision.I also have to assimilate it and he has to give me explanations. After that, we’ll see. When I signed here, we had ideas about who would be the captain”.
“Courtois was one of the first people I thought of. I love him as a goalkeeper and as a human being. We have a good relationship, for me nothing has changed. Now is not the right time to talk about his future. It was Courtois’ decision to leave. There’s still a long time until September, we can talk about it later.”
Tedesco also wanted to make it clear that Courtois did not have any injury: “I wish I could say that it is an injury, as his father has said, but I cannot lie. I really can’t do that. He had some problems after the game, but they were the same as before the game against Austria”.
“Sure enough, he needed treatment on his knee, but the doctor had given him the green light. I always try to protect the players but here it is impossible”.
